Dr. YOU

I want to start off with a disclaimer. I’m not sure if you can tell from the thick glasses or not, but… I’m a huge nerd that specializes as a chiropractor Post Falls ID. Anyone with me? Any other nerds? …… Ok so a few of us. Well, in my opinion, being a nerd just means that you are really passionate about something, and you’re not afraid to show it. Sooooo… I’m about to totally “nerd out” right now… about the human body. More specifically, about one incredible power that you and I have.

I bet you didn’t even know, YOU have a superpower. It’s called “innate intelligence”, and it’s not from getting bit by a spider or from gamma radiation or anything like that. Innate means “born with”, and this is a superpower every single one of us has. This is the power that regulates and repairs your body. So, you’re basically Wolverine.

This innate intelligence controls everything, from coordinating your immune system to fight off the flu, to healing a cut on your finger, even things that seem simple, like telling your heart to beat faster when you run. This super power keeps you going, keeps you healthy, without you ever having to think about it, and without having to take a pill or get a shot, because our bodies are designed to be healthy, all on their own. How cool is that?!

This means that health then, is not something that comes from the outside, it’s not something you can “get” or “take”. No. Health is something that comes from within. It is something you express. Think of it like having your own world-class doctor within you – “Dr. YOU”

This SUPER power, to heal and keep ourselves healthy, is made possible by way of your nervous system. Your nervous system is what connects your brain to your body and your body to your brain, and these two send signals back and forth to each other at speeds up to 180 miles per hour! Faster than I could even snap my fingers. Because in that time, my brain sent a directions to the muscles of my hand and my hand sent signals back saying “got it boss!” That fast.

It’s by using these instantaneous signals that your innate intelligence is able to coordinate the millions of things going on in your body at once, like digesting your breakfast, building new cells, and keeping you on the edge of your seat right now. Your spinal cord, and the nerves that come off it, are the highways that transmit those instructions. That’s a pretty important job, I mean, your life kind of depends on it!

It’s actually so important, that your brain and spinal cord, what’s known as your “central” nervous system, were the very first things formed while you were developing as a fetus and are the only things in your body ENTIRELY protected by bone – your skull, and your spine – and trust me, we’ll get back to that.

Your nervous system is needed so early in life because it controls every other cell, tissue, and organ in your body. This is why it is so important in keeping you healthy, and this is what I meant when I said that health comes from within, through the connection of your brain to your body, above down, inside to out. That’s your super power.  

That’s Dr. You.

So how do we optimize this power? How do we help our nervous system function as well as possible?! Well, the first part is easy, and something you’ve probably been told 1,000 times by your mom or dad. What we put in to our bodies is equal to what we get out of them. So it IS really important to eat good, nutritious foods and drink lots and lots of water. The “house” that is your body, is only as good as the materials you use to build it. I guess your parents were right about one thing.

The second part is less obvious, and that is that you need to think good thoughts. Now that may sound weird, but your thoughts and emotions have physical effects on your body. And just like the food you eat, what you put in your mind is a direct reflection of what you will get out of it – physically and emotionally – so be happy! Simply put, happier people are healthier, and really, each and every one of us has a lot to be happy for. Be positive. Being positive in life doesn’t get you everything, but it gets you everything better than being negative does. Think. I mean really take time to think. About your goals and your dreams. Now, just thinking won’t make them all come true, but your thoughts directly affect your actions, and your actions shape your life.

The last thing you need to do for a healthy nervous system is the most important, and that is because there is one nutrient that your brain needs more than almost any other, and that nutrient… is movement. Whether it’s playing sports, or dancing, or walking or biking or knitting! …really ANYthing besides sitting – That movement is feeding your brain.

So students, I encourage you to incorporate movement into your studies. Even if it’s just walking around while you read your text book or study your notes. You’ll find that not only is it easier to focus, but you’ll remember it better too.

Teachers, I challenge you to create an environment in your classroom that allows for students to move as they learn, whether it be movement breaks, or sitting on exercise balls or using the little pedal desks… which exist! This movement helps them, which helps you. Your students are not designed to sit still for hours every day. That’s not how they are wired. It’s not how we are wired. We are wired to move. Make motion part of your material.

Now, most people know that they need to eat healthy and exercise, and that these things are good for the body. But I’m going to go one step further. I’m going to tell you about something that a lot of people don’t realize has anything to do with their OVERALL health, let alone the health of their nervous system. Remember how I said we’d get back to the spine?______________________________________________________________________________

Well, just as we need to move our arms and legs when we exercise, we need to make sure our spine is moving well too. It’s actually made up of 24 movable segments called vertebrae. These bones protect your nervous system and keep you standing, while still allowing you to bend and twist… but, if one or more of those bones get out of place, or gets stuck and stops moving, it actually irritates your nervous system, and this irritation interferes with the signals being sent from your brain to your body, and your body to your brain. When this happens, it messes with that innate intelligence we talked about. Think of it like kryptonite to your super power. That interference is called a subluxation. 

So we all know if haven’t eaten our veggies, or haven’t worked out this … year. But how do you know if you have nerve interference? Most people think something like that has to hurt, right? Not always. In fact, of the signals flowing through your nervous system, only about 10% are pain signals. The rest are used for coordinating the function of your body. So the only way to know for sure is by getting your spine and nervous system checked. Who does that? Well there are doctors specifically trained to detect and correct any subluxations you may have.  They’re called chiropractors.

Some people still think chiropractic is just for back and neck pain, but really it’s all about caring for your nervous system. They use specific adjustments to make sure that your spine is moving the way it’s supposed to, without drugs or surgery, so that your nervous system can be free of interference. This lets your body function, and heal, the way it was designed to: from the inside, by allowing that innate intelligence, your super power, to do its thing. That is the power of Dr. YOU.

Your superpower is an amazing gift – treat it like one and take care of it. Don’t take it for granted. Your health is YOUR responsibility. You only get one body, and it needs to last your whole life. You got lucky though – your body is incredible, just like the mind, the heart, and the soul it contains. YOU are incredible. Which is a good thing because the world needs YOU, and it needs you at 100%. Not your best version of someone else, or anyone that has came before you. No, our world needs the best, most original version of YOU possible. And guess what…? You’re capable of that!

You have GREAT within you!

because you have innate, within you.

So use it, go out, and be a super hero.
